Son Gual Golf CourseLocation:- Palma Majorca Course Designer:- Himmel The former estates of a private property have been shaped and moulded into an excellent layout by German architect Thomas Himmel, whose design includes a 1.2km artificial river incorporating 28 separate cascades, and a waterfall beneath the clubhouse at the 18th hole. This venture was the vision of a single private investor from Germany. Son Gual is one of four new golf courses being built in Mallorca. It is situated close to Palma just off the road to Manacor. Himmel has employed some inventive design at Son Gual, including some of the largest tees in the world of golf. For example the tee at the par 3, 15th is at least the size of three greens. Created as a par 72, water is a predominant feature on the course. Seven lakes come into play (the largest being 6,500m2). Son Gual will become known for its visual beauty, but also for the excitement of playing golf over a body of water so often in a round. Another unusual feature is Himmel’s use of massive bunkering. There is one sand trap that measures 240m by 84m, at the par 4, 2nd Hole. Ron Swing, the golf course superintendent at Son Gual, told Golf Monthly Magazine that cool season grasses like blue, rye, and fescue are mixed in the semi-rough, and that this will give the course a lush natural appearance, while the greens and tees will be bentgrass. Swing is also lucky enough to be using a highly advanced golf course irrigation system, the only one of its kind in Europe. Golf Son Gual will be a tremendous addition to Mallorcan golf, and should be open next year(2006). Its potential is thrilling, and you can expect a slightly higher green fee to match.
